February is American Heart Month
(COLUMBIA, MO) -- February is American Heart Month. Heart disease
is the leading cause of death in the United States claiming hundreds of
thousands of lives every year. Missouri continues to rank among the
states with the highest cardiovascular mortality rates. Missouris
heart disease mortality rate was the 10th worst in the nation in 2002,
while Missouris stroke mortality rate was 13th worst in the nation.
One of the goals of the Columbia/Boone County Health Department
(CBCHD) is to help increase awareness of cardiovascular risk factors
among the residents of Columbia and Boone County. Individuals can reduce
their chance of developing heart disease by exercising regularly,
maintaining healthy eating habits, avoiding tobacco use and monitoring
cholesterol and blood pressure levels. Residents can stop by the CBCHD
Monday through Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m., including the lunch hour,
to have their blood pressure checked by the nurses on duty at no
charge.
The CBCHD has a variety of information concerning heart disease.
Brochures describe the symptoms of heart attack and stroke, provide
practical exercises to maintain and improve heart health and how to
manage cholesterol for heart health. Literature and brochures are also
available at no charge and are on display in the CBCHD lobby at 1005
West Worley. Arrangements can also be made with the CBCHD for
educational programs about heart health to groups and organizations at
no charge.
For additional information on the heart health services provided
by the CBHCH, contact Chris Coffman at (573) 874-7453 or by email at
jccoffma at GoColumbiaMo.com.
