Four steps to heart health

	(COLUMBIA, MO) -- Reducing the risk of heart disease and stroke,
the nation’s No. 1 and No. 3 killers respectively, is easy through our
daily lifestyle choices. Nobody - not even your doctor - can do as much
as you can do to guard against heart disease and stroke.
   	There is a simple, straightforward plan offered by the American
Heart Association that consists of four steps to promote heart health.
Every day, individuals should strive to:
1. be physically active--use up at least as many calories as you take
in;
2. eat a variety of nutritious foods, specifically fruits, vegetables,
whole grains and fat-free/low-fat dairy products;
3. limit foods and beverages that are high in calories but low in
nutrients-soda, alcohol and “junk” food; and
4. don’t smoke tobacco - and stay away from tobacco smoke.
	The Columbia/Boone County Health Department (CBCHD), located at
1005 West Worley, has American Heart Association literature concerning
nutrition, exercise and making healthy choices for your heart health.
Brochures are available to the public at no charge and are on display in
the CBCHD lobby. There are also several Web sites with information
including the following:
 	www.americanheart.org
 	www.cdc.gov/nchs
 	www.nhlbinih.gov/resources/index.htm
 	www.GoColumbiaMo.com
For additional information on the heart health services provided by the
CBCHD, contact Chris Coffman at (573) 874-7453 or by email at
