Early morning fire at College Town Apartments in eastern Columbia
COLUMBIA, MO (February 20, 2007) -- On Feb. 20 at 2:43 a.m. units of
the Columbia Fire Department responded to a commercial structure fire at
2209 Oakwood. Arriving fire companies found heavy smoke coming from the
apartment building and entered into the first floor level. Once inside,
they discovered the floor was burned out in the rear room and reversed
out of the apartment. They made entry into the basement and attacked the
fire from two vantage points.
Several of the apartment units in the building, including the one above
the fire, were vacant due to remodeling efforts of the new owners. The
fire was brought under control within 20 minutes by crews totaling 16
personnel. Fire investigators have determined the cause to be failure of
a light fixture in the basement storage area. Red Cross was called to
the scene to help the residents who needed assistance in locating
temporary lodging.
No injuries to civilians or firefighters occurred during the incident.
Damage has been estimated to be approximately $125,000.
