Firefighters slip and slide to rescue 5-year-old Lab from slippery slope

COLUMBIA, MO (January 16, 2007) -- Firefighters from the Columbia Fire Department were called to 2512 Vista View Terrace at 11:29 p.m. on Monday, Jan. 15, to assist with rescuing a dog that had slid down an embankment, estimated to be about 300 feet long, and into a creek bed. The dog did not appear to be injured, but could not get back up the hill to his owners home due to icy conditions.

Firefighters from Station 7 responded and evaluated the situation and then requested the resources of the heavy Rescue Squad, Squad 3.

As the hill was quite steep very slippery, firefighters using rescue techniques practiced for high angle technical rescue, set up ropes and riggings to lower Capt. Steven Forrest and Fire Engineer Andy Gray down the embankment to the aid of "Winston", a 5-year-old white Labrador Retriever.

Acting Fire Division Chief Darren Arends stated, "I'm not sure that one person stayed on their feet during the event because of the ice and snow, but Winston was not injured and we were able to get him up the hill without any injuries."

Firefighters reunited Winston with his owners, Paul and Karen Dale of 2512 Vista View Terrace. Winston and his owners both appeared in good spirits and no one seemed worse for the wear.

During this period of winter weather and the heavy ice conditions on many sidewalks, parking lots, and other areas, the Columbia Fire Department urges everyone to use caution when walking to vehicles or their destinations. The Columbia Fire Department has responded to over a dozen medical emergencies related to falls caused by icy conditions over the past three days.
