Meningitis vaccine available for children at reduced cost

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Each year there are approximately 3,000 cases of meningococcal disease reported in the United States, the type and impact of the disease may vary by age group. Although meningococcal disease is relatively rare, adolescents and young adults are at increased risk. Meningococcal disease is a serious bacterial infection than can cause meningitis-severe swelling of the brain and spinal cord. It can also lead to sepsis-a dangerous and potentially life-threatening infection. Unlike many common infections, meningococcal disease can worsen very rapidly, often within 48 hours. The bacteria that cause meningococcal disease are spread through air droplets (i.e., coughing, sneezing) and by direct contact with an infected person (sharing a water bottle or a drinking glass).
The Columbia-Boone County Health Department (CBCHD) currently has a limited supply of Menactra* (meningococcal vaccine) available at a reduced cost of $15 (usual cost is $85). The reduced cost supply is only available for children and adolescents between the ages of 11 and 20 years.
Vaccinations are available on a walk-in basis at the CBCHD while supplies last through March 7, 2007. The CBCHD is located at 1005 W. Worley St. and clinic hours are Monday-Friday, 8 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. For more information on vaccine and availability, call (573) 874-7356.

Note: Many colleges and universities now require that students be vaccinated for meningococcal disease prior to attendance. Parents of high school students should contact university or organization to learn about their specific immunization requirements.
