Firefighters retrieve dog from icy waters of Twin Lakes
COLUMBIA, MO (January 19, 2007) -- Around 1:30 p.m. today, firefighters were called to Twin Lakes by David Buck, who spotted his roommates dog Jake stranded in the icy waters of the west lake.
Shortly after arriving, two firefighters donned Mustang suits designed for buoyancy and keeping the rescuers dry. Firefighters used a Zodiac boat and ropes to make their way out to Jake and retrieve him from the water.
Jake was in the water for a little more than 30 minutes before being rescued. When the rescue was complete, a wet, shivering Jake seemed to be just fine, but he was taken to a veterinarian for precautionary reasons.
The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind you never to attempt to rescue an animal that has fallen through the ice. Chances are that if the ice is not thick enough to support the weight of the animal, it will not support the weight of a person. Please call 9-1-1.
