Fire at 509 Banks Avenue destroys home - update
COLUMBIA, MO (July 21, 2007) - On Saturday, July 21, at 6:40 a.m. the
Columbia Fire Department responded to a house fire at 509 Banks Ave.
Fire crews arrived on the scene and found the attached garage and attic
heavily involved in fire. The house was quickly searched and no one was
found inside. Firefighters mounted an interior attack and also sprayed
water from above using an aerial apparatus to control the blaze.
Three vehicles were parked in the driveway near the house and all were
damaged by the fire. The radiant heat from the fire was so intense that
it also damaged the exterior siding on a neighbor's home.
The occupants of 509 Banks Ave., Robert Turner and his family, had left
their home early this morning for a family trip. After the fire was
reported, family members contacted the occupants and they returned to
find their home heavily damaged by fire.
Columbia fire investigators have determined that the fire began in the
attached garage. The cause of the fire is still under investigation. It
is estimated that the home is a complete loss with damage to the home,
contents, vehicles and the neighbors home between $100,000 and $150,000.
The Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross is working with the
family to provide temporary housing, clothing and meals.
