Fire sprinkler system holds fire in check at UMC lab

COLUMBIA, MO (July 23, 2007) - On Saturday, July 21, at 10:03 p.m. the
Columbia Fire Department responded to a fire alarm at 416 South 6th St.,
the University of Missouri Engineering Building.

Firefighters arrived to find the fire sprinkler alarm sounding and
located a fire sprinkler head activation in a lab room. The fire
sprinkler system held the fire in check near an exhaust hood preventing
the fire from spreading and causing additional damage.

Firefighters extinguished the remaining fire and assisted in mopping up
water from the sprinkler system. Water damage was miniscule compared to
what fire damage could have occurred.

The fire originated near an exhaust hood when a hot plate used in a lab
process was left on. The damage was confined to a small area of the lab.
No damage estimates have been provided by the University of Missouri.

This is another example of how effective fire sprinkler systems can be
in containing and extinguishing fires before major damage occurs.
