Parks and Recreation planning rededication of Douglass Park and pool
COLUMBIA, MO (June 7, 2007) - Columbia Parks and Recreation is planning
a rededication and ribbon cutting ceremony at Douglass Park and Pool at
1 p.m. on June 16 to commemorate recent improvements at the facility.
Admission to the pool will be free that day between 1 and 1:30 p.m.
After that, admission will cost only 10 cents the rest of the day for
youth and adults. Parks and Recreation aquatic staff is planning games
for kids at the top of every hour starting at 2 p.m.
The improvements at the pool includes a new modular climbing wall,
which will allow swimmers to climb up a few feet and then fall back into
the water. Douglass is the only city pool to have this feature.
Extensive repairs were made to the pool shell, gutter system, plumbing
and mechanical systems, improvements were made to the bathhouse, and the
slide was refurbished. Westport Pools Inc. was the contractor for the
project. The cost was covered by $200,000 in park sales tax funds and
$99,000 through the Community Development Block Grant program.
The rest of the park has undergone a facelift as well. New basketball
courts were completed in time for the Moonlight Hoops summer basketball
program. New concrete walkways and lighting/electrical improvements are
underway and should be completed by the end of June. Karrenbrock
Construction performed the concrete work. This $150,000 project was
funded by the park sales tax.
The rededication is being held in conjunction with the annual
Juneteenth celebration at Douglass Park.
