Public art opportunity: City Hall expansion, plaza and streetscape

COLUMBIA, MO (June 15, 2007) - The city of Columbia Office of Cultural
Affairs (OCA) invites artists to apply for a public art project related
to the renovation and expansion of City Hall. Once completed, the
overall construction project, associated site developments and eventual
art will be a focal point for downtown city government facilities,
provide new public spaces and underscore the city’s commitment to this
vital area.

The project is a component of Columbia’s Percent for Art program,
established in 1997, which requires that one percent of total
construction costs for eligible new and renovation projects be set aside
for site-specific public art. For this project, the city’s Standing
Committee on Public Art is working with Jeffrey L. Bruce & Company (JBC)
to facilitate the selection of an artist or artists. The Standing
Committee is composed of citizen volunteers appointed by the City
Council.

The budget threshold for this Percent for Art project has been
established at $200,000 and will include some funds raised through
private donations. An additional $50,000 has been set aside for art by
local artists only, to be commissioned at a later date.

The new City Hall wing, planned for the corner of 8th Street and
Broadway, should be complete some time in 2009. Selecting a qualified
artist at this early date will allow that individual to work with
project architects and city staff to make basic decisions about
construction, landscaping and finishing details.

The Percent for Art project is open to all artists, including those
residing in Columbia and the state of Missouri. Artists should submit
qualifications only, not design proposals. Guidelines for applying are
available at www.GoColumbiaMo.com/Arts (select the “artist
opportunity” link at the top of the page) or by contacting JBC. To be
considered, complete applications must be postmarked July 9, 2007.
