Roundabouts - a coming trend in Columbia
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Since the late 1990s, Columbia has been
incorporating roundabouts at intersections throughout the city.
Roundabouts have been used effectively for many years all over the
world. They have been accepted enthusiastically because they provide
increased safety, along with traffic calming and aesthetic benefits.
Recently, roundabouts have been used in the United States to
reduce crashes, traffic delays, construction and maintenance costs and
fuel consumption. Studies conducted by the Insurance Institute for
Highway Safety show that after converting to roundabouts, total crashes
declined by 39 percent.
Columbia now has 12 roundabouts in use and there are plans to
add more in future construction projects. A common misconception at
these intersections is who has right-of-way and the use of yield signs,
rather than stop signs. Through the city channel (Columbia Channel), the
city’s Web site and other media Web sites, city staff will be
educating citizens on how to drive safely in roundabouts. The Columbia
Channel is working on an educational segment, which will air this
summer.

they are in Columbia, visit the city’s Web site at
