Governor signs Senate Bill 54
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia announces that a new act
modifying laws pertaining to environmental regulation and renewable
energy has been signed by Governor Blunt. Staff from the Public Works
Department were present at Monday’s ceremony in Weston, Mo., when the
governor signed the bill.
This new act allows yard waste to be disposed of in a municipal
solid waste disposal area when the Department of Natural Resources
approves the operation of the disposal area as a bioreactor and when the
landfill gas will be used for electricity generation. Senator Chris
Koster sponsored the Green Power Initiative, which encourages electric
companies to make a good-faith effort toward meeting renewable energy
targets. The bill also requires electric suppliers to make metering
available to customers who have their own electric generation units that
meet certain criteria, one of which is that the unit is powered by
renewable energy resources.
More information on Senate Bill 54 can be found on the state of
Missouri Web site at www.senate.mo.gov. For more information on the city
of Columbia bioreactor, contact the Public Works Department at (573)
874-7250 or on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
