Statewide Tornado Drill/Severe Weather Week 2007
COLUMBIA, MO (March 7, 2007) -- March 12-16 has been designated as
severe weather week, with a statewide tornado drill being initiated
midday on Tuesday, March 13.
The National Weather Service has indicated that in 2006 the state of
Missouri had a record of 102 tornados. This drill is the perfect
opportunity for us to plan and prepare for severe weather season.
Knowing what to do, or where to go when severe weather threatens, can be
the difference between life and death.
While we try our best to notify the community by means of outdoor
warning sirens, local media, NOAA weather radio and many other methods
of communication, we cannot emphasize enough the value of personal
responsibility. When you are aware of the potential for bad weather, do
not disregard the warning! Make it your responsibility to continually
check on the approaching storms and take action long before the storms
arrive.
If you hear a warning issued, stop what you’re doing, take time to
find out what’s occurring. Don’t be surprised. Take shelter
immediately and listen to local broadcast stations to find out what to
do next. Have places of shelter pre-planned. Expect the worse and hope
for the best.
Always go to the lowest portion of any structure, innermost room,
without windows, expensive ceilings or unsecured items. If you’re on
the roadway, leave your vehicle and seek cover in a ditch.
