TreeKeeper volunteers to be recognized Saturday
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Twenty-three TreeKeeper volunteers will be
recognized by the city of Columbia this Saturday, March 10, for
completing a six-week course in tree care and management. A breakfast to
thank the volunteers will be held at Reichmann Pavilion, 2300 E. Walnut,
in Stephens Lake Park beginning at 7:15 a.m. Following the breakfast,
TreeKeepers will plant trees at the park.
The TreeKeepers program is sponsored by the city of Columbia
Parks & Recreation Department- Forestry Division and the Office of
Volunteer Services. After completing course work, volunteers are asked
to volunteer 36 hours on tree projects in city parks and along trails
and streets.
In addition to the 2007 class, seven volunteers from past
classes will be honored for completing their 36 hours of service to the
city: Deb Denham, Cheryl Hardy, Eileen Johnson, James Kaufman, Greg
Leonard, George March and Jean Sax.
Each year, TreeKeeper volunteers give hundreds of hours to city
tree projects. Since the program began in 1998, more than 200
volunteers have participated giving nearly 5,300 hours of service.
Another TreeKeepers course will be conducted in early 2008.
Those interested in participating, or volunteering for the city in any
way, should contact the city of Columbia’s Office of Volunteer
Services at 874-7499 or visit the city’s Web site at
