Boards and commissions applications are available
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday,
April 6. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or may be
found on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City
Council page. The following are current boards and commissions
openings:
● The Airport Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to
expire May 16, 2011. Members must be registered voters of the city and
be familiar with the subject of aviation. The board makes
recommendations to Council for the development and use of the airport.
Monthly meetings are held the first Wednesday following the first Monday
at 12 p.m. at the airport.
● The Board Of Adjustment has one vacancy with the term to expire
May 1, 2012. The board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals
where it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement,
decision or determination made by an administrative official in the
enforcement of zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly
meetings are held the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.
● The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member) in the
following categories: residential rental property owner (term to expire
Aug. 1, 2007) and person experienced in fire prevention (term to expire
Aug. 1, 2008). The commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
● The Community Development Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire Nov. 1, 2008. The member must be a qualified voter of
Ward 6 and shall not serve on the board of directors or be employed by
any agency which applies for funding through the commission or which
receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The commission
acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to community
development. Monthly meetings are held on call.
● The Disabilities Commission has three vacancies with terms to
expire June 15, 2007, June 15, 2008 and June 15, 2009, respectively. Two
shall have a significant disability as defined by the Americans with
Disabilities Act and one shall own or operate businesses within the
Columbia area. All must be residents of the city of Columbia. The
commission considers concerns relating to residents with disabilities.
Monthly meetings are held on the second Thursday at 3 p.m.
● The Environment and Energy Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire June 1, 2009. The member must be a qualified voter of the
city and should have knowledge in matters pertaining to the environment.
The commission
serves in an advisory capacity for all matters pertaining to
environmental protection and conservation. Monthly meetings held the
fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m.
● The Health Insurance Appeals Board has one vacancy with the term
to expire Feb. 16, 2010. The member must have substantive professional
experience in benefits administration for a large organization. The
board hears appeals from the decisions of the administrator. Monthly
meetings are held on call.
● The Library Board has one vacancy to be appointed by the mayor
with the term to expire June 30, 2009. The member must reside within the
Library District and shall hold no other office or position in city
government. Duties include appointing the librarian and overseeing
expenditures of library fund monies. Monthly meetings are held the first
Thursday after the first Tuesday.
● The Liquor License Review Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire May 1, 2010. The board hears appeals from the decisions regarding
the denial of liquor licenses. Meetings are held on call.
● The Mayor’s Committee On Physical Fitness has one vacancy to
be appointed by the mayor. The committee educates the public about the
importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes, initiates
and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in the
community. Monthly meetings are held on the second Monday at 12:30 p.m.
● The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2009. The member shall be a registered professional
engineer. The board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical
heating, ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and
certificates. Meetings are held the second Tuesday every other month at
5 p.m.
● The Planning & Zoning Commission has three vacancies with two
terms to expire May 31, 2012 and one term to expire either May 31, 2008
or May 31, 2011. Members must be qualified voters and residents of the
city for at least one year immediately prior to appointment, and shall
hold no other office or position in city government. The commission
makes recommendations pertaining to planning and zoning related issues.
Meetings held on the Thursday following council meeting Mondays at 7
p.m.
