First C.A.R.P. volunteer project Saturday at Flat Branch

(COLUMBIA, MO) - This Saturday, May 5, the first class of the
city’s Columbia Aquatic Restoration Project (C.A.R.P.) volunteers will
plant iris along the creek at Flat Branch Park, 101 S. Fourth St.,
beginning at 8 a.m. This will be the first project for the volunteer
program.
The purpose of C.A.R.P. is to support the Columbia Parks &
Recreation Department in implementing an aquatic plant and shoreline
management plan. In March, volunteers participated in a three-evening
class where they learned about lake and pond ecology, aquatic plants and
insects and the importance of stormwater management. Twenty-two people
participated in the class.
A second project is scheduled for Saturday, June 9, beginning at
8 a.m. at Stephens Lake Park.
The public may participate in C.A.R.P. by registering for the
next class offered in the spring of 2008 by contacting the city’s
Office of Volunteer Services at 874-7499 or volunteer at GoColumbiaMo.com.
