Unattended cooking cause of fire in northeast Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (May 5, 2007) - Around 5 p.m. today an apartment in
northeast Columbia caught fire as a result of unattended cooking.
Firefighters responding arrived to find heavy black smoke inside 2606
Quail Dr., Apt. A.

Firefighters from two quint trucks, one snozzle, one ladder truck and
one squad company acted quickly to extinguish the fire within a few
minutes.

The origin of the fire was the kitchen stovetop and the cause was
determined to be unattended cooking. The female occupant who just
recently moved in was putting away personal items and forgot about a
meal she was preparing. The occupant was treated at the scene for smoke
inhalation and refused further treatment or transport. Fire
investigators placed the damage estimate at $5,000 to the structure and
contents.

After the fire was extinguished it was noticed that the occupant had
smoke detectors that did not sound. The Columbia Fire Department would
like to remind residents to change the batteries in their smoke
detectors at least twice a year and test them often.
