Furnace malfunction in north central Columbia sparks Fire Department
response
COLUMBIA, MO (May 15, 2007) - At approximately 11:13 a.m. today, units
of the Columbia Fire Department responded to a reported commercial
structure fire at 2511 Quail Drive. Reports indicated smoke coming from
the door of apartment 4, but no occupants answered the knocks on the
door by a neighbor. The first arriving fire company forced entry into
the apartment and found a furnace overheating. The natural gas was shut
off to the appliance and further inspection was conducted by
firefighters to ensure no hidden fires existed.
Use of a thermal imaging camera was invaluable in detecting the extent
of heat spread throughout the duct work in the home. Damage was
estimated at approximately $3,000 . Firefighters did note that working
smoke detectors were present in the apartment. Columbia Fire Department
would like to remind all residents to have their heating equipment
inspected by a professional on an annual basis to ensure energy
efficiency and safety.
