USS Columbia Submarine crew members visit, public reception planned for
Friday, May 25
(COLUMBIA, MO) - Three crew members from Columbia’s namesake
submarine, USS Columbia, have arrived in Columbia to participate in
Memorial Day Weekend activities. The public is invited to an informal
“no host” reception at 5 p.m. on Friday, May 25, at Boone Tavern
and Restaurant, 811 E. Walnut.
Visiting crew members include Lieutenant (junior grade) John
Kalscheuer, the USS Columbia’s damage control assistant, Petty Officer
First Class Zion Hallenbeck, the senior sailor of the year and nuclear
mechanic onboard the ship, and Petty Officer Second Class Alan Cleary,
junior sailor of the year and navigation electronics technician.
The crew will attend the Honored Guests and Volunteers Banquet
Saturday night; attend the air show on Sunday; participate in the
Memorial Day parade on Monday as guests of the Muddy MO Chapter of the
World War II Submarine Veteran’s Association; and will lay a wreath at
the Courthouse on Monday morning.
The visit is sponsored by the Columbia Submarine Committee that
is chaired
by Anne Moore, D&M Sound. The VFW Ladies Auxiliary and the VFW have
both
provided financial resources to defray costs.
The USS Columbia was christened in September 1994. It has
namesake cities in Missouri, Illinois and South Carolina. Crew from the
USS Columbia have participated in Memorial Weekend events every year but
one since 1994. Columbia, Mo., and the USS Columbia is one of the
