America Recycles Day
COLUMBIA, MO (November 2, 2007) - Each holiday season, during the five
weeks between Thanksgiving and New Year’s Day, Americans can generate
25 million tons of trash. Help Columbia kick off the “Use Less
Stuff” campaign during national America Recycles Day on Nov. 15.
The Public Works Volunteer Program will host a recycling booth on
Thursday, Nov. 15, from noon to 4 p.m. at the Daniel Boone Regional
Library. Stop by to learn ways to minimize waste this holiday season.
Every year between Thanksgiving and New Year’s, Americans trash 2.3
billion greeting cards; that’s 26,000 miles of cards or enough to
circle the entire planet. Greeting cards are not the only things in the
garbage. It is very easy to cut the amount sent to landfills from
Thanksgiving to New Year’s. Trim the trash you are creating by
practicing the 4R’s: rethink, reduce, reuse and recycle. Here are a
few examples about how to use less stuff and save money this holiday
season. Rethink your holiday purchases by buying rechargeable batteries
for toys and gadgets. Reduce trash by canceling unwanted mailings and
catalogs. Reuse gift bags, ribbon, boxes and packing materials. Recycle
your Christmas tree.
Become a leader in waste prevention. Visit our Web site at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com and search “use less stuff” for more tips.
If we all make a small effort to use less stuff, we can make a world of
difference. For more information on how you can help, please call the
Public Works Volunteer Program at (573) 874-6271. Thank you for
recycling and keeping Columbia clean.
