Second-alarm fire damages equipment at Gates Rubber - update
COLUMBIA, MO (October 2, 2007) - Columbia firefighters responded to a
report of a commercial structure fire at Gates Rubber, 3015 Lemone
Industrial Drive, at 11a.m. on Monday, Oct. 1. The fire was reported by
a plant member who advised there was a fire in a "batch mixer" located
on the northeast corner of the plant.
Fire investigators working with plant maintenance personnel have
determined that the fire began in a mixing area of the batch mixer. A
thermo coupler failed during the process and dropped hot material which
caught fire and eventually spread to the air handlers used to collect
the raw powder used in the mix.
A damage estimate has not been determined.
The plant resumed normal operations with the exception of the line
which was involved in the fire, according to plant managers.
