Firefighters respond to house fire

COLUMBIA, MO (October 10, 2007) - Columbia firefighters were called
just before 4:30 a.m. on Wednesday, Oct. 10, to 2606 B Quail Dr. for a
report of a house fire.

Arriving fire units reported heavy fire from the roof of the duplex.
Firefighters used aerial apparatus to help extinguish the fire after
ensuring that all occupants were out of the duplex. The occupants of
side B, James Burkes, 47, Montalee Burks, 44, and their son Michael
Linzi-Hayes, 11, were asleep at the time of the fire and were awakened
by neighbors knocking on the front door. The family is being assisted by
the Boone County Chapter of the American Red Cross with temporary
housing, food and clothing.

The occupant of side A, Sherma Hayes 51, was already being assisted by
the Red Cross and was not at home at the time of the fire.

None of the occupants or firefighters suffered injury during the fire.

Firefighters had the fire knocked down in about 20 minutes and the fire
scene was under control in less then one hour.

Fire damage to the entire structure was extensive and most of the
contents of the homes were destroyed or damaged in the fire. Damage
estimates to the structure and contents are estimated between $200 -
225,000.

Fire investigators have determined that the origin of the fire was in
the attic space above the kitchen. The cause of the fire was determined
to be smoldering insulation, remnants from the kitchen fire on Oct. 9,
coming into contact with combustible building materials.
