New bicycle symbols at intersections
(COLUMBIA, MO) - As part of the city of Columbia’s new
nonmotorized transportation pilot program, the Public Works Department
has begun on-street markings of new bike symbols. These new symbols are
placed on the pavement indicating the optimum position for a cyclist to
actuate the signal. New white painted bike symbols have been placed at
the intersection of West Boulevard and Worley Street. Crews will also
mark the intersections of West Worley and Clinkscales Road, West Worley
and Garth Avenue, and West Worley and Bernadette Drive in the near
future. Drivers should not experience changes as far as signal
activation. Motorcyclists and scooter riders can also take note of the
markings for help in triggering the signal. The markings being placed
are part of the Manual on Uniform Traffic Control Devices.
Typically, cyclists can expect vehicles to help trigger signal
activation. Therefore, the markings are most helpful to cyclists in
times of low vehicle traffic where a cyclist may not be waiting at the
same time a vehicle is in the same lane. Rules of the road apply to all
yielding maneuvers. Bicyclists need to yield to through traffic to enter
the lane. Once a bicyclist is in a travel lane, drivers should yield to
the cyclist just like other vehicles. The markings should reduce the
risk of a frustrated cyclist maneuvering through a red light, which
could increase the risk of collisions.
Anyone having questions related to the street markings should
contact the Public Works Department at 874-7250.
