Ribbon cutting for Columbia Transit planned
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia Public Works Department and
Columbia Transit invite the public to attend a special ribbon-cutting
ceremony with featured guest the Honorable Kenny Hulshof, member of
Congress-Missouri, Ninth District. The ceremony will be held on Monday,
Oct. 22, at 8 a.m. at the city’s Grissum Building, 1313 Lakeview Ave.
Congressman Hulshof will be honored at this event for his
assistance in funding two new city buses, which are part of the Columba
Transit system. In 2004, Congressman Hulshof identified funding for much
needed equipment for Columbia Transit via a Federal Transit
Administration grant. This $826,000 grant funded two replacement
Paratransit vans that arrived in June 2006, bus shelters and benches,
fare boxes and on-board security systems for five existing buses. Two
new Gillig buses that arrived in August 2007, utilized the balance of
this grant. These projects are funded 80 percent from federal funds and
the remaining 20 percent from local transportation sales tax.
The new buses are not replacement buses; they are a fleet
increase due to the increased ridership the system has experienced.
Columbia Transit has seen a significant increase in ridership, up 18.5
percent from a year ago. The new buses meet all new EPA guidelines and
operate on bio diesel, which is an alternative fuel that is cheaper and
significantly reduces regulated emissions
Columbia Transit recently celebrated the completion of the
newly-renovated Wabash Station, which received $3.5 million in
renovations as part of a grant from the Federal Transit Administration.
For more information about the event, contact the Public Works
Department at (573) 874-7250.
