Extrication accident on Highway 63 results in serious injury

COLUMBIA, MO (October 25, 2007) - This afternoon around 3 p.m. units of
the Columbia Fire Department and Boone County Fire Protection District
responded to an extrication accident on the west side of Highway 63 just
south of the AC exit. Witnesses reported that a large SUV traveling
north left the roadway, crossed the median and the southbound lanes
before coming to rest several hundred feet off the roadway in a ditch
amongst trees.

A fire began in the engine compartment of the vehicle and bystanders
attempted to remove the driver without success. A volunteer with the
fire district had a small extinguisher, but it was not enough to bring
the fire under control. Columbia Fire Department's Quint 3 arrived on
the scene and was able to extinguish the fire with a hoseline along with
extricating the driver from the vehicle. The driver of the vehicle
sustained burns over several areas of his body and was taken to
University Hospital for treatment.

The cause of the accident is under investigation by the Columbia Police
Department. Additional information regarding this incident will be
released as it becomes available.
