Energy efficiency tips and tools for low-income residents
November 1, 2007
8 a.m. to noon
Central Missouri Community Action
400 Wilkes Boulevard
Columbia, Missouri

(Columbia, MO) -- Columbia Water & Light is partnering with
Central Missouri Community Action (CMCA) to provide basic weatherization
information and materials to area residents. In order to specifically
target low-income residents, the event is being held on the first day
that winter utility assistance funds are available at CMCA.
Some low-income housing units in Boone County are not energy
efficient so utility bills can be high. In order to help this segment of
the population become more energy efficient, Columbia Water & Light and
CMCA will demonstrate and provide information on: compact fluorescent
light bulbs, water heater wraps, low flow
showerheads, plastic window kits and weather stripping. One hundred
weatherization kits will also be distributed to elderly individuals who
need help weatherizing their homes. University of Missouri students have
volunteered to spend their Saturdays installing the energy efficiency
items.
Utility assistance funds to help low-income people in our
community have been sought at a higher rate in the last several years.
The Columbia Boone County Health Department disperses funds for the CASH
and HELP utility assistance programs. The funds for these programs have
been running out within the first couple of days of the month. CMCA also
provides utility assistance and has seen an increased number of
applicants. In order to help low-income people control their utility
bills and not require as much assistance, both entities encourage energy
efficiency measures.
