Mayor Hindman to attend U.S. Conference of Mayors National Climate
Summit in Seattle, Nov. 1-2
(COLUMBIA, MO) -- Mayor Darwin Hindman will join his colleagues
from across the nation for the 2007 U.S. Conference of Mayors’ Climate
Protection Summit. Held in Seattle, Washington, Nov. 1-2, the event will
be the largest-ever meeting of American mayors devoted solely to climate
protection.
More than 100 mayors from across the country representing
millions of Americans will discuss the impact of climate change on their
communities and the steps cities are taking to reduce greenhouse gas
pollution. The mayors will participate in a wide range of sessions
including:
● Creating jobs and growing a green economy;
● Designing a climate-friendly transportation system;
● Reducing sprawl through smart growth; and
● Building a green city at home and work.
The U.S. Conference of Mayors is the official nonpartisan
organization of over 1,100 cities with populations of 30,000 or more.
The Mayors Climate Protection Summit presents attendees the opportunity
to share and understand how local governments are leading the way on
climate protection in the United States and creating solutions in homes,
at work and on the road.
Hindman strongly supports a variety of environmental initiatives
such as Columbia’s Renewable Energy Standard, which was passed by more
than 75 percent of Columbia voters in 2004. Columbia’s municipal
utility is the only utility in Missouri having such a standard, which
sets cost and portfolio targets of increasing sources of sustainable
power through end of 2022. The City is ahead of schedule and will more
than meet 2012 target (5 percent of electric retail sales from renewable
resources) by end of 2008. Columbia already has wind and methane
contracts and continues to develop options.
In July 2006, Mayor Hindman and the City Council endorsed the
U.S. Mayors Climate Protection Agreement which encourages communities to
take actions that meet or exceed Kyoto Protocol targets for reducing
global warming pollution. The city of Columbia strives to meet these
targets through a variety of policies regarding emissions inventory;
land use policies; alternative transportation; clean energy; efficient
buildings and energy use; Energy Star equipment; sustainable building
practices: vehicle fuel efficiency; water and wastewater systems;
recycling; urban forests and trees; and climate education.
Several of the city’s conservation programs and other
environmentally friendly tactics are featured at www.GoColumbiaMo.com.
