Smoke forces evacuation of Kelly Plaza
COLUMBIA, MO (September 17, 2007) - This afternoon at approximately 2
p.m. units of the Columbia Fire Department responded to a commercial
structure fire at Kelly Plaza, located at 1900 N. Providence Road. Smoke
was discovered on the first and second floor of the structure and
firefighters began trying to locate the source of the smoke while also
conducting an evacuation of the building. The electrical power was shut
off to the structure in an attempt to eliminate a possible ignition
source while the investigation was in progress.
It was determined that an HVAC unit's blower motor malfunctioned, which
in turn ignited the filter. Smoke was cleared from the building using
ventilation fans and the occupants were allowed to return to their
businesses after approximately one and a half hours. Damage to the
structure was contained to the HVAC unit itself and no injuries were
reported. Two quints, one ladder, one tower, one engine and a rescue
squad responded to the incident along with several administrative
personnel.
