Early morning fire activates sprinkler system at residential care
facility

COLUMBIA, MO (September 19, 2007) - At approximately 1 a.m. this
morning, units of the Columbia Fire Department responded to a structure
fire at West Village Manor, 1201 Hunt Ave. Upon arrival, fire crews
found a commercial dryer in the laundry area on fire. Enough heat was
generated by the fire that a single sprinkler head was activated. Crews
worked to extinguish the fire, along with removing smoke and water from
the structure.

Residents of the facility were able to remain in their rooms during the
event with the exception of one due to the water leak. The exact cause
of the fire is undetermined due to the damage to the dryer. The fire was
contained to a single room, however water damage occurred in another
area of the building due to a failure of a water pipe. Damage has been
estimated in the area of $20,000.
