Garage fire in central Columbia damages apartment
COLUMBIA, MO (September 20, 2007) - At 4:04 a.m. on Thursday, Sept. 20,
units of the Columbia Fire Department responded to a structure fire at
1711-A Monroe St. Upon arrival, crews found smoke and flames coming from
the attached garage. The fire was quickly brought under control and
salvage operations were used to protect as much of the occupants
personal belongings as possible. The fire was contained to the garage,
but the apartment sustained smoke and water damage.
The Columbia Fire Department responded to a call at this residence for
a natural gas odor at 1:29 a.m., however nothing was found. Crews were
not able to detect the odor of gas by smell or with the use of a
combustible gas monitor (CGM). A CGM measures upper and lower
percentages of different gases in the atmosphere along with oxygen
levels.
A Columbia fire investigator is currently on the scene working to
determine the origin and cause of the fire. Damage estimates have not
been determined at this time. No injuries were sustained by the
occupants or fire personnel. Additional information will be released
when it becomes available.
