Boards and commissions applications are available
COLUMBIA, MO (September 19, 2007) - The Columbia city clerk is
accepting applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be
received by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on
Friday, Oct. 5. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or
may be found on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the
City Council page. The following are current boards and commissions
openings:
The Board of Adjustment has one vacancy for an alternate member, to
serve in the absence of a regular member, with the term to expire Nov.
1, 2012. The Board is responsible for hearing and deciding appeals where
it is alleged there is an error in any order, requirement, decision or
determination made by administrative officials in the enforcement of the
zoning, planning and subdividing ordinances. Monthly meetings are held
the second Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Building Construction Codes Commission has four vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member) for
each of the following categories: professional engineer with experience
in electrical/mechanical (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010); residential
rental property owner (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010); master plumber
(term to expire Aug. 1, 2010), person experienced in fire prevention
(term to expire Aug. 1, 2008). The commission periodically reviews and
makes recommendations relating to building construction codes. Monthly
meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The Cultural Affairs Commission has four vacancies with terms to expire
Oct. 31, 2010. One member shall have significant knowledge and have
demonstrated an interest in one or more areas of the arts, including
music, dance, literature, visual arts, theater, folk arts, media arts,
design and arts education; one shall be from the business and
professional community; and one shall be involved in elementary or
secondary education. The remaining vacancy does not have a specific
qualification. Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be
employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission
or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The
commission advises the Council in all matters pertaining to the arts and
cultural environment of the city. Monthly meetings held on the second
Monday at 4:15 p.m.
The Community Development Commission has three vacancies with terms to
expire Nov. 1, 2010. One member each is needed from Ward 2 and Ward 3.
The other member can be from any ward. All must be qualified voters of
the city. Members shall not serve on the board of directors or be
employed by any agency which applies for funding through the commission
or which receives funding upon recommendation of the commission. The
commission acts in an advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to
community development. Monthly meetings held on call.
The Disabilities Commission has one vacancy with the term to expire
June 15, 2009. The member must have a significant disability as defined
by the Americans with Disabilities Act and must be a resident of the
city. The commission considers concerns relating to residents with
disabilities. Monthly meetings are held the second Thursday at 3 p.m.
The Board of Electrical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to
expire Aug. 1, 2010. The member must be a registered professional
engineer. The board is empowered to give examinations for
electricians’ licenses and certificates. Meetings are held on
call.
The Board of Health has one vacancy with the term to expire Aug. 31,
2010. The member must be a veterinarian and a registered, qualified
voter of the city. The board acts in an advisory capacity to the Council
on matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly
meetings are held the second Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
The Health Insurance Appeals Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire Feb. 16, 2010. The member must have substantive professional
experience in benefits administration for a large organization. The
board hears appeals from the decisions of the administrator. Monthly
meetings are held on call.
The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to
expire June 17, 2009. The member shall be a registered professional
engineer and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Monthly
meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The New Century Fund Board has two vacancies with terms to expire Sept.
30, 2010. Both members should have an interest in the future of the city
of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future success.
All must be current residents and qualified electors of the city of
Columbia. The New Century Fund Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit
corporation. Meetings are held on call.
The Parks And Recreation Commission has one vacancy with the term to
expire May 31, 2010. One member is needed from Ward 3. The member must
be a registered, qualified voter of the city. The commission acts in an
advisory capacity in all matters pertaining to public recreation.
Monthly meetings held on the third Thursday at 7 p.m.
The Substance Abuse Advisory Commission has two vacancies with terms to
expire Oct. 31, 2010. Both members shall have demonstrated an interest
in and a concern for substance and alcohol abuse problems in the
community. The commission promotes coordination of programs intended to
prevent and eliminate alcohol and substance abuse. Monthly meetings are
held the second Wednesday at 12 p.m.
