Unattended cooking fire damages duplex in west Columbia

COLUMBIA, MO (September 19, 2007) - Damage estimates are near $25,000
for an unattended cooking fire on Claudell Lane today around 2:30 p.m.
When fire units arrived, they found flames and smoke coming from the
front door of 610 Claudell, Apt A. According to reports from the Joint
Communications Information Center (911), the resident, Kela Williams,
stated the stove was on fire and she was instructed to evacuate the
home.

Fire department personnel arrived and were able to quickly bring the
fire under control. The home sustained substantial fire damage to the
kitchen and smoke damage throughout the home. Williams stated that she
was putting a pot of water on to boil, but inadvertently turned on a
burner that held a pot of cooking oil and then went out on her porch. By
the time she realized what had happened, the fire was out of control.

The Columbia Fire Department would like to remind all citizens to be
attentive when cooking, as this is the nation's leading causes of
residential fires.
