New bicycle corral to be installed on Ninth Street

(COLUMBIA, MO) - As part of the GetAbout Columbia non-motorized
transportation pilot program, the Public Works Department will install a
new bicycle corral in downtown Columbia. The new on-street bicycle
parking will be installed on Thursday, April 24, weather permitting, at
the corner of Ninth and Cherry streets.
The bicycle parking corral replaces one car parking space with
parking for 12 bikes. Lack of bicycle parking in downtown Columbia was
identified as one of the projects for GetAbout Columbia to address.
Currently, downtown has 113 spaces intended for bicycle parking.
Comparatively, the University of Missouri campus has 4,566 spaces
available for bicycle parking. As cycling gains popularity in Columbia,
cyclists need more places to park. One of the project goals is to
install 1,000 bicycle racks in the downtown area. These improvements are
part of the overall $22 million non-motorized pilot program being funded
by the Federal Highway Administration.
The cost of the bicycle corral is about $1,000. Users of the
Ninth and Cherry bicycle corral will be asked to contribute spare change
to a meter located at the corral to help fund future bicycle parking
spaces throughout Columbia. For more information on GetAbout Columbia,
check out the Web site at www.getaboutcolumbia.com.
