Accidental fire in northeast Columbia apartment causes minor damage

COLUMBIA, MO (August 12, 2008) - An accidental fire caused $500 damage
to a stove in a northeast Columbia apartment on Mexico Gravel Road
shortly after 4 p.m. today. Just after 4 p.m. Columbia firefighters
responded to the report of a commercial structure Fire at 2811 Mexico
Gravel Road, apartment "C."

On arrival, firefighters found no signs of smoke, however when they
proceeded into the apartment they found the stovetop smoking and small
flames coming from a burner. A dry chemical extinguisher was used to
knock down the fire.

It was determined that the fire started when Brenda Warren (the
occupant's mother) was cooking. Fire investigators state that the fire
remains undetermined and it only damaged the stove with minor burn marks
to the wall above. The apartment is rented to Trenda Walker, who was not
at home at the time. Her children were home but no injuries were
reported during the incident. Smoke detectors did not play a role in the
incident.
