Boone County placed under rabies alert

COLUMBIA, MO (August 14, 2008) - The Missouri Department of Health and
Human Services has placed Boone County under a rabies alert, effective
immediately. Seven bats found in Boone County have tested positive for
bats this year, a significant increase over the past 5-year period.

The Columbia/Boone County Health Department Animal Control Division
advises citizens to:
- Avoid contact with wild animals and stray pets.
- Make sure dogs and cats are vaccinated against rabies.
- Keep pets under control; do not let them run loose.
- Do not keep wild animals as pets.
- Notify Animal Control if you suspect an animal has rabies.
- Seek immediate medical evaluation when bitten or otherwise injured by
an animal.

Animal Control Officers are available 24 hours a day to catch bats
within homes or buildings. Persons needing assistance may call
573.449.1888.
