Boards and commissions applications are available
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th floor, by noon on Friday,
Sept. 5. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or on the
city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City Council page. The
following are current boards and commissions openings:
● The Building Construction Codes Commission has two vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence regular members) for each of
the following categories: professional engineer with experience in
electrical/mechanical engineering (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010) and a
master plumber (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010. The commission periodically
reviews and makes recommendations relating to building construction
codes. Monthly meetings are held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
● The C.A.R.E. Advisory Board has one vacancy with the term to
expire March 1, 2011. The member must be an employer who has previously
employed C.A.R.E. trainees and has an interest in promoting the C.A.R.E.
program to current and prospective employers in Columbia and Boone
County. The board advises the Council on matters pertaining to the
C.A.R.E. program. Meetings are held on call.
● The Community Services Advisory Commission has one vacancy with
the term to expire Dec. 31, 2008. The member must be a qualified voter
and resident of the city of Columbia. Members shall not serve on the
board of directors or be employed by any agency which applies for
funding through the commission or which receives funding upon
recommendation of the commission. (Each academic and administrative unit
of the University of Missouri shall be considered a separate agency and
each school of the Columbia Public School District shall be considered a
separate agency.) The commission advises the city and county in all
matters regarding the planning and contracting for human service
programs to adequately meet the needs of the citizens. Monthly meetings
are held on the third Tuesday at 7 p.m.
● The Convention and Visitors Advisory Board has seven vacancies
with terms to expire Sept. 30, 2010. Three must be owners or operators
of a hotel or motel within the city limits. All shall have demonstrated
by past activities an interest in the convention and tourism business.
The board shall advise the city on the use of the funds created by the
hotel and motel tax. Monthly meetings are held the last Monday at 12
p.m.
● The Environment and Energy Commission has one vacancy with the
term to expire June 1, 2009. The member must be a qualified voter of the
city and should have knowledge in matters pertaining to the environment.
The commission serves in an advisory capacity for matters pertaining to
environmental protection and conservation. Monthly meetings are held the
fourth Tuesday at 7 p.m.
● The Board of Health has two vacancies with terms to expire Aug.
31, 2011. One member must be a dentist and one must have an interest in
public health. The board acts in an advisory capacity to the council on
matters pertaining to public health and animal control. Monthly meetings
are held the second Thursday at 5:30 p.m.
● The Internet Citizens Advisory Group has two vacancies with
terms to expire Oct. 15, 2011. Members assess the user-friendliness and
effectiveness of the city’s Internet activities. The group makes
recommendations to staff and Council on resource priority for the
city’s effective utilization of the Internet. Meetings are held
every other month on the third Wednesday at 5 p.m.
● The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term
to expire June 17, 2011. The member must be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and a resident of the city of Columbia. The board is
empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating, ventilation, air
conditioning and refrigeration licenses and certificates. Meetings are
held the second Tuesday of the month at 5 p.m.
● The New Century Fund Board has three vacancies with terms to
expire Sept. 30, 2011. All members should have an interest in the future
of the city of Columbia and the funding needs required to achieve future
success. All must be current residents and qualified electors of the
city of Columbia. The New Century Fund Inc. is a Missouri
not-for-profit corporation. Meetings are held on call.
● The Personnel Advisory Board has three vacancies with terms to
expire Sept. 30, 2011. Members shall have significant, substantive
knowledge of social, legislative, political, and administrative factors
affecting personnel management and employee relations. All must be
residents and registered qualified voters of the city. In addition,
members must not hold a lucrative position in city government nor any
other lucrative public office during their terms. The board advises the
council on its findings, opinions, various conclusions and
recommendations on the status of the personnel system. Meetings are held
on call.
● The Special Business District Board has one vacancy with the
term to expire Jan. 1, 2009. The member must be an owner of real
property within the Special Business District, a resident of the Special
Business District or a person who owns, manages, operates or is employed
by a business located in the Special Business District. The board makes
recommendations to the council regarding the Special Business District.
Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 4 p.m.
