Firefighters respond to evening fire; cat suffers minor smoke
inhalation

COLUMBIA, MO (August 22, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
8:52 p.m. on Friday, Aug. 22, to 1812 Business Loop 70 West, Lot 10 of
Park Trailer Park, for a report of a residential structure fire. 

Firefighters arrived to find light smoke coming from the mobile home.
The occupants of the mobile home were home at the time of the fire and
the three occupants evacuated. Firefighters located one cat inside the
mobile home. The cat was transported by the owner to a local vet for
observation. 

Firefighters knocked down a small fire in less than five minutes.

The occupants smelled smoke and then saw smoke coming from a closet
which houses the water heater. The smoke alarms in the mobile home were
disabled. 

Fire investigators believe the fire began in or near the closet housing
the water heater. The cause of the fire is still under investigation.
Damage to the structure and contents is estimated between $10,000 and
$15,000. The occupants and the cat are staying with local friends until
the mobile home can be repaired.
