Tent collapse injures 20 during severe thunderstorm

COLUMBIA, MO (August 28, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
7:11 p.m. on Thursday, August 28, to 2601 Blue Ridge Road, First Church
of the Nazarene, for a report of a tent collapse with several injuries.

Fire crews arrived and discovered that a large outdoor tent was being
used for a church function when a severe thunderstorm struck the area,
and strong winds caused the tent to collapse onto a large group of
people. Fire and EMS crews treated approximately 20 injured victims,
consisting of lacerations, broken bones and one head injury. Eighteen
victims were treated for minor injuries, and two were treated for
moderate injuries. Four victims were transported to area hospitals by
ambulance.

Columbia fire crews responded to 21 calls related to the severe
thunderstorms which struck Columbia and Boone County this evening.
