Fire damages southeast Columbia home

COLUMBIA, MO (August 28, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
2:24 p.m. on Thursday, Aug. 28, to 2701 East Nifong Blvd., Lot 190,
Columbia Regency Trailer Park, for a report of a structure fire.

Firefighters arrived and observed light smoke coming from the home.
They entered the home, where they discovered a small fire in the front
bedroom, which was quickly extinguished. Crews then used large electric
fans to remove the remaining smoke. The fire was contained to the front
bedroom, with minor smoke damage throughout the home. There were no
injuries and damage is estimated at $2,500. The home is owned by Dawn
Bryant.

The occupant, Catherine Prall, reported to fire crews that she was
watching television when she began to see smoke filling the home. When
she discovered the fire, she evacuated and called 9-1-1 for fire
department assistance.

The home did not have any working smoke detectors installed.

A visitor to a nearby home, Randy Jones, saw the smoke and entered the
home in an effort to assist Prall. He discovered the fire in the bedroom
and used pans of water and a garden hose to control the fire prior to
fire department arrival.

Investigators from the Columbia Fire Department were on scene and at
this time the cause remains under investigation.

The American Red Cross is providing emergency housing assistance to the
occupants.

Residents are urged to ensure they have working smoke detectors
installed on each level of their home and outside each sleeping area.
Smoke detectors save lives!
