Homeowner arrives to find residence on fire
COLUMBIA, MO (December 18, 2008) - Around 8:36 p.m. Columbia
firefighters responded to 412 Hillsdale Road for a structure fire that
was called in by a neighbor across the street. Steve Ledford of 411
Hillsdale Rd reported to 9-1-1 that a lot of smoke was coming from a
window on the southwest corner of the house.
Fire crews arrived to find smoke coming from that window as the
homeowner was arriving to his residence. The homeowner opened the front
door for fire crews to make entry and extinguish the fire. Once inside,
crews were able to knock down the blaze in less than five minutes
despite the heavy smoke. Firefighters did report hearing working smoke
detectors at the time of entry.
Investigators on the scene have determined the cause of the fire to be
electrical in nature originating on the wall where extension cords were
used to power a computer and other equipment. Initial damage estimates
to the structure and contents is $40,000.
