Columbia firefighters rescue dog from icy water

COLUMBIA, MO (December 23, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
11:32 a.m. to 2500 Chapel Hill Road, Twin Lakes Park, for a report of an
animal rescue.

Firefighters arrived and discovered a Boston Terrier had run from its
owner and chased a duck onto the frozen lake, and then fell through the
ice. Fire crews donned specialized dry suits, designed to protect
personnel from frigid water temperatures and entered the lake. The dog
was rescued 12 minutes after fire crews arrived on-scene.

The animal was not injured and was being taken to a local veterinarian
for evaluation. There were no injuries to the owner or fire crews.

The Columbia Fire Department reminds all pet owners to keep their pets
secured on a leash when around frozen waterways. If your pet does
venture onto the ice or falls through into the water, do not attempt to
rescue the animal. Contact 9-1-1 and fire department units will be
dispatched. Fire crews possess the specialized equipment and training
needed to enter this dangerous environment.

Local lakes and ponds are ice covered, but are not safe to walk or
skate on. Snow covered ice is a particular hazard because defects in the
ice are not visible.
