Public invited to become TreeKeeper volunteers

(COLUMBIA, MO) - Columbia residents who have an interest in
trees in city parks, along trails and in city rights of way are invited
to participate in the 2009 TreeKeepers volunteer program.
TreeKeepers attend a three-session course in tree management,
including information on identification, planting, pruning, diseases and
tree pests. The 2009 course will be held Thursday evening, Jan. 22,
Saturday morning, Jan. 24, and Tuesday evening, Jan. 27, at the ARC,
1701 West Ash Street. The course is taught by staff from the city of
Columbia, the Missouri Department of Conservation and faculty at the
University of Missouri.
In exchange for the educational component of the program,
participants are required to volunteer 36 hours working on tree projects
in city parks, along trails, at the city nursery and along city rights
of way.
The TreeKeepers program was created in 1998 as a partnership
between the city’s Office of Volunteer Services, Parks & Recreation
Department and the Missouri Department of Conservation. Since the
program began, more than 220 volunteers have given 10,650 hours of
service to the city.
For more information on becoming a TreeKeeper, contact the
Office of Volunteer Services at 874-7499 or e-mail
volunteer at GoColumbiaMo.com. Details are also available on the
