Boards and commissions applications are available
COLUMBIA, MO (January 24, 2008) - The Columbia city clerk is accepting
applications for boards and commissions. Applications must be received
by the clerk’s office, 701 E. Broadway, 4th Floor, by noon on Friday,
Feb. 8. Applications are available at the clerk’s office or may be
found on the city’s Web site at www.GoColumbiaMo.com on the City
Council page. The following are current boards and commissions openings:
The Building Construction Codes Commission has four vacancies for
alternate members (to serve in the absence of the regular member) in
each of the following categories: professional engineer with experience
in electrical/mechanical (term to expire Aug. 1, 2010); master plumber
(term to expire Aug. 1, 2010), major contractor or superintendent (term
to expire Aug. 1, 2009); person experienced in fire prevention (term to
expire Aug. 1, 2008). The commission periodically reviews and makes
recommendations relating to building construction codes. Meetings are
held the fourth Monday at 4:30 p.m.
The C.A.R.E. Advisory Board has two vacancies with terms to expire
March 1, 2011. One member must be an employer who has previously
employed C.A.R.E. trainees and both must be interested in promoting the
C.A.R.E. program to current and prospective employers in Columbia and
Boone County. The board advises the Council on matters pertaining to the
C.A.R.E. program. Meetings are held on call.
The Board of Electrical Examiners has one vacancy with term to expire
Aug. 1, 2010. The member must be a registered professional engineer. The
board is empowered to give examinations for electricians’ licenses and
certificates. Meetings are held on call.
The Finance Advisory and Audit Committee has two vacancies with terms
to expire Dec. 31, 2010. One must be a certified public accountant with
knowledge of public administration and finance. Consideration will be
given to a business owner for the second vacancy. Both must be qualified
voters and residents of the city for at least one year prior to
appointment. The committee makes recommendations on financial matters to
the Council as needed. Meetings are held on call.
The Housing Authority Board has one vacancy to be appointed by the
mayor with the term to expire May 31, 2011. The member must be a
taxpayer who has resided in the city of Columbia for one year prior to
appointment. Duties include overseeing housing projects. Monthly
meetings are held the third Tuesday at 5:30 p.m.
The Human Rights Commission has three vacancies with terms to expire
March 1, 2011. Members shall have demonstrated a strong commitment to
human rights and a belief in the principles of equal opportunity. The
commission advises the Council on human rights issues and reviews and
makes decisions regarding complaints of discrimination filed with the
city. Monthly meetings are held the first Tuesday at 7 p.m.
The Mayor’s Committee On Physical Fitness has one vacancy with the
term to expire Nov. 30, 2009. The committee educates the public about
the importance of regular physical fitness activity and promotes,
initiates and encourages local physical fitness and sports programs in
the community. Monthly meetings are held the second Monday at 12:30
p.m.
The Board of Mechanical Examiners has one vacancy with the term to
expire June 17, 2008. The member shall be a general contractor not in
the HVACR business and must be a resident of the city of Columbia. The
board is empowered to give examinations for mechanical heating,
ventilation, air conditioning and refrigeration licenses and
certificates. Monthly meetings are held the second Tuesday at 5 p.m.
The Sustainable Farms & Communities Board has one vacancy with the term
to expire Dec. 31, 2009. The member must be a resident of the city.
Members are responsible for overseeing the future construction,
maintenance and operations of a farmers market community center. The
Sustainable Farms and Communities Inc. is a Missouri not-for-profit
corporation. Monthly meetings are held on call.
The University of Missouri Extension Council of Boone County has one
vacancy with the term to expire March 1, 2009. The member must be a
resident of the city. The Council makes recommendations to the
university in regard to the extension program and administers Boone
County’s share of the cost of the extension services in the area.
Monthly meetings are held the fourth Thursday at 7 p.m.
