Public Art Opportunity: Fire Station No. 7
(COLUMBIA, MO) - The city of Columbia Office of Cultural Affairs
(OCA) invites artists residing in the Missouri counties of Audrain,
Boone, Callaway, Cole, Cooper, Howard, Moniteau and Randolph to apply
for a public art project for the city’s Fire Station No. 7. The art
budget for the fire station project is $13,000.
Fire Station No. 7 is to be relocated from South Providence Road
to the corner of Green Meadows and Green Meadows Circle on approximately
two acres of land owned by the city. Once completed, the station will
feature drive-thru bays for safer movement of trucks and more room for
reserve and specialty equipment, as well as living quarters for the fire
department employees who will staff the station 24 hours a day. A
groundbreaking ceremony was held at the site on Jan. 10.
Artists should submit qualifications only, not design proposals,
a hallmark of the city’s Percent for Art program since it allows the
artist, once selected, to propose a work or works after they are under
contract and have learned about the overall construction site and
project.
A prospectus, including guidelines for applying, is available at
www.GoColumbiaMo.com/Arts (select the “artist opportunity” link at
the top of the page) or by contacting the OCA for a printed version. To
be considered, complete applications must be postmarked by March 10,
2008.
The Fire Station No. 7 project is a component of Columbia’s
Percent for Art program, established in 1997, which requires that one
percent of total construction costs for eligible new and renovation
projects be set aside for site-specific public art.
For more information, contact the OCA at (573) 874-7512,
oca at GoColumbiaMo.com.
