Firefighters called for a technical rescue at Capen Park

COLUMBIA, MO (January 27, 2008) - Around 4:37 p.m. units of the
Columbia Fire Department responded to a technical rescue at Capen Park
(off of Rock Quarry Road) for a female stuck on a bluff.

The female, Charlie Richey, was hiking with Matthew Williams when the
incident occurred. After Williams slipped down the hill, Richey was
stranded on a bluff and had to wait for firefighters to help her down
the hill.

Firefighters from Ladder 1’s crew secured ropes from the top of the
bluff by accessing Providence Point, while other firefighters from
Rescue Squad 3 and Quit 3 prepared to climb to the victim. When the crew
from Rescue Squad 3 reached Richey they secured a rescue harness to her
and lowered her to the ground using an R.P.M (rack, pulley and mariner)
system. In all, the rescue took over an hour to complete. Neither of the
hikers was seriously injured, with the exception of a few abrasions to
Williams for which he refused medical treatment.
