Fire Fighters Respond to Early Morning Fire At Oakland Junior High School Mobile Classroom
COLUMBIA, MO (July 14 2008) - Columbia fire fighters were called at 3:18 am on Monday, July 14 2008 to 3405 Oakland Place, Oakland Junior High School, for a report of a fire alarm.
Upon arrival, fire fighters noticed very light smoke in the mobile classroom building and requested additional units as a precaution.
Fire fighters located the source of the smoke underneath the trailer and were able to extinguish some smoldering insulation in less than 5 minutes. Fire fighters removed the majority of the insulation from the underneath side of the trailer as a precaution. There was very light smoke in the classroom and no fire damage. Fire damage to the underneath side of the trailer was confined to the insulation mainly along the main steel floor beam of the trailer.
Fire investigators working with Columbia Public School District maintenance officials are looking at a possible electrical issue as a cause of the fire. However, the cause is still under investigation. Later today, an electrician will examine wiring.
No classes are being held in the mobile classroom this summer so there is no disruption to the summer school schedule at Oakland Junior High School.
Damage is estimated at less then $1,000.00. Much of the credit for minimal damage goes to the working fire alarm systems installed in mobile classrooms which provided early notification.
