Public meeting scheduled to address architectural survey of ‘east
downtown’ properties
(Columbia, MO) -- A public meeting at 7 p.m. on July 30 will
give property owners
and interested parties the opportunity to learn about an architectural
and historic survey
of “east downtown’” the city has commissioned as part of a
Historic Preservation Fund
grant through the Missouri Department of Natural Resources. The meeting
will be held
in the Friends Room of the Daniel Boone Regional Library, 100 West
Broadway.
The area to be surveyed is bounded by Locust Street to the
north, University
Avenue to the south, South Ninth Street to the west and South College
Avenue to the
east. The work to be conducted will be an architectural survey of
historic structures
more than 50 years of age within the area described above.
Approximately 60
properties will be surveyed. Results of the work will allow for the
definition of eligibility
of structures and districts for inclusion in the National Register of
Historic Places.
The St. Louis-based consultant team of Ruth Keenoy and Teri
Foley has been
contracted to conduct this survey. Administration of the survey work is
being coordinated through the Department of Planning & Development and
the Columbia Historic Preservation Commission.
On behalf of the city’s Historic Preservation Commission, the
city made
application to the Missouri Department of Natural Resources (DNR) for
the grant in the
fall of 2007 and received notification of the grant award earlier this
year. Properties
which are listed on the National Register of Historic Places are
eligible for state and
federal tax credits to encourage building rehabilitation. More
information on these tax
credits and other elements of a National Register listing is available
on the Missouri
Department of Natural Resources - State Historic Preservation Office
Web site
(www.dnr.mo.gov/shpo).
