Columbia/Boone County Health Department cautions citizens about bats
COLUMBIA, MO (July 24, 2008) - The Columbia/Boone County Health
Department Animal Control Division has obtained three bats within the
last month that have tested positive for rabies. The first was picked up
June 29 at Westwood Avenue. The second was picked up July 15 on N. South
Court in Sunrise Estates. The third was picked up July 22 on Gans Road,
just south of the Columbia city limits. In all three cases, there have
not been any confirmed human positive rabies cases.
Animal Control is requesting anyone in proximity of a bat to refrain
from contact. Although most bats are healthy and do not pose a threat,
it’s important to avoid contact. Animal control officers are available
to catch bats within homes or buildings.
Those wanting assistance may call (573) 449-1888. Animal control
officers are available 24 hours a day. If you think you have been bitten
by a bat, seek immediate medical attention.
