Columbia fire truck damaged in morning accident

COLUMBIA, MO (June 5, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at 9:46
a.m. on Thursday, June 5, to 800 Hospital Drive, VA Hospital, for a
report of an automatic fire alarm system activation. Units from Fire
Station Three at 1001 Ashland Road and Station One at 201 Orr Street
were dispatched. During the response, the apparatus dispatched from
station three, "Quint 3", was involved in an accident at the
intersection of Ashland Road and College Avenue.

While responding to the emergency call with all warning lights and
siren operating, the apparatus approached the intersection of Ashland
Road and College Avenue and, consistent with proper procedure, the
apparatus operator brought the truck to a full stop. The operator then
pulled the apparatus forward slowly into the intersection. As the
apparatus broke the plane of the intersection, a northbound 2003
Chevrolet Cavalier, driven by Kathryn Lucchesi of Columbia, struck the
front of the apparatus.

There were no injuries to any occupant of either vehicle. All occupants
of the fire apparatus were wearing their seat belts. The apparatus
suffered minor damage and the Cavalier suffered moderate damage. The
fire apparatus was inspected by vehicle maintenance personnel and
remains in service for emergency calls. Damage estimates are currently
being gathered and no estimate is available at this time.

The Columbia Fire Department urges all drivers to remain attentive to
their surroundings while traveling the roadways and to yield to any
emergency vehicle with warning equipment operating.

The original fire alarm dispatch was later determined to be a false
alarm.
