Firefighters respond to early morning fire in vehicle repair shop

COLUMBIA, MO (June 16, 2008) - Columbia firefighters were called at
8:22 a.m. to Maddox Motors at 405 East Business Loop 70 East after a
customer reported to the shop owner that smoke was coming from the
building. Firefighters arrived on the scene at 8:26 a.m. to find
moderate smoke coming from the rear and roof of the building.

Firefighters made initial entry into the building through the main
doors to the office area and encountered moderate smoke. Other crews
forced open a garage-type door at the rear of the building and located
the fire along the east wall of the shop area. Firefighters were able to
knock the fire down within a couple of minutes. 

The owner of the business, Jeff Maddox, had left the building
momentarily to pick up a vehicle to be worked on. While Maddox was gone,
a customer dropping off a vehicle noticed smoke coming from the building
and called Maddox on his cell phone. Maddox called 9-1-1 from his cell
phone while returning to the business. 

Fire investigators working with the business owner have estimated the
damage to the building and contents at $5,000. Fire investigators
determined that the fire began along the east wall of the shop area. The
cause of the fire is undetermined and under investigation.
